Additional Info:

I'm excited to tell you all that New Mexico Senate Bill #SB 464(sponsored by NM Senator Ortiz y Pino) has passed the NM House 49-12 tonight (after passing the NM Senate last week on a much closer vote).  This bill provides greater protection for a middle school or high school student's privacy and safety in relation to excessive and inappropriate recruiting efforts made towards them by (primarily) military recruiting officials.  It requires that recruiters sign in when they arrive on a school campus, prevents them from being 1 on 1 with a student without additional visible supervision, lets parents/students 'opt out' of the release of private information to recruiting organizations, requires a parents approval to remove a student from a school campus, and limits recruiter access to no more than 6 days an academic year.

This bill was successful primarily due to the hard work of Maria Santelli (from the GI Rights Hotline in Albuquerque), the local non-profit 'Another Side' (with their many volunteers over the last 3 years), and the Alb. Center for Peace and Justice along with research funding from NYU (Thanks Gary Anderson).  Thanks also go out to many of the activists, veterans, NMPED legal staff and the legislators who saw how important this issue is in New Mexico.
