NNOMY News October 12, 2019 - Confronting Militarism at your High School

Counter-recruitment efforts are facing the challenges of national CR groups aging and facing reduced access to schools, lower recruitment rates due to a strong economy and racial and economic divides between those who are active in resisting school military recruiting and the demographics of the students that the Pentagon is increasingly targeting. Yet there still exists committed groups nationally that continue to look for ways to reach students with a counter-narrative on the full reality of what it means to serve in America's wars in post 9/11 America.

Local Efforts Towards Military Counter-recruitment in Boston

Bonnie J. Caracciolo, Chelsea Uniting Against the War (CUAW) - On September 9, 2019 members and supporters of Chelsea Uniting Against the War (CUAW) greeted students on their way to school. CUAW was there to inform students about their right to opt out from having their personal information given to military recruiters.

Since 2001 and the No Child Left Behind Act along with the 2002 National Defense Authorization Act- both which provided for the presence of military recruiters in middle- and high-schools - young people have become vulnerable targets.

The group distributed over 1000 leaflets describing the facts about military enlistment including information on homelessness among veterans along with other serious issues. One in ten homeless people in the US is a military veteran. (2019) Additionally, 150 opt out forms were handed out.

Chelsea High School is in a mostly immigrant, working-class neighborhood near Boston, MA. Current enrollment is 1,335 students in 9th through 12th grade.

Excerpts from Student Papers

On Visit by John Burns to Class Studying “Just War” in an Alternative NYC High School, Spring 2018

“I do the We Are Not Your Soldiers visits because I feel it’s important for students and young adults to have information to make well-informed decisions. The fact that these kids are usually exposed to only one side of the story with countless movies and media glorifying war in general is an extreme disservice to the people of the United States. Given that I use these speaking tours as my own therapy should say a lot about how much the military affects you. I want to say on record that I do not hate our military. I hate what our military is being used for. I love my country and that’s coming from a Haudenosaunee Native American whose own ancestors were slaughtered by the very institution I enlisted in. ”

New Graphic Novels Honor Hero Medal of Honor Recipients

The Association of the United States Army today announced the release of two new graphic novels, created by legendary comic book artists, in its series designed to pay tribute to Medal of Honor recipients.

"Medal of Honor: Audie Murphy" and "Medal of Honor: Sal Giunta" will be featured in a new book -- which includes two previously released graphic novels on Staff Sgt. Roy Benavidez and Sgt. Alvin York -- at AUSA's Annual Meeting and Exposition in Washington, D.C., according to an AUSA press release.

The counter-recruitment community needs to challenge this type of material with comix depicting the horrors of war and the resulting ramifications for American youth. These materials, produced by the Pentagon, are used to manipulate naive and vulnerable youth into national service based on heroic fantasy and claims of patriotic service while U.S. wars become more preemptive and serving corporate profiteering and foreign policy goals to dominate other countries resources..
