My Education for Peace Support PDF

Why "My Education for Peace"?

Our current model of education, in ways that are equally apparent and subliminal, fosters the need for competition, individualism, and power, all of which serve as justifications for war. At NNOMY, we firmly believe that our peace effort begins through education: learning and teaching cooperation, solidarity, and tolerance. Only by creating an environment in which respect for the other and their differences becomes paramount can we surpass our culture's militaristic bent. "My Education for Peace" is a project that seeks to promote the discussion and dissemination of topics related to peace, war, and the consequences of militarism in society, as well as encourage peace-building within our schools. For NNOMY, it is of vital importance that we bring informational resources to students that can allow them to see the full width of peaceful career choices at their disposal. This is done through the Peaceful Careers directory.

The Northwest Suburban Peace & Education Project formed in the spring of 2004 and disbanded in April of 2021. We are people that live and work in the northwest suburbs. Many of us have or had children in the public schools. As parents and community members we are concerned about the role of the military in our schools.

Through our personal connections we have gained access to several local high schools. We set up a table in the commons area during the lunch periods and talk to the students about their options. Our purpose is not to talk the students out of joining the military. We are not anti-military. We simply want to make sure that our young people have thought through what they are doing. At the same time, we engage the students in discussions about what is going on in the world; the role of the United States in world affairs. We believe the strength of a democracy lies in all its citizens actively engaged in what's going on.

Peaceful Career Alternatives

The Peaceful Career Alternatives website has been developed with the support of multiple national, regional, and local peace and religious organizations to provide young people deciding how to begin their productive working lives with alternative ideas and options without entering military service.

We encourage school counselors, parents, teachers, and most of all our youth, to utilize this resource before recommending or deciding on a military career and to network this resource to those considering enlistment.
