Theme: Climate Justice and Militarism

A convenient issue to disregard in the climate debate is the impact of the world's largest military footprint and the dangers that is inflicting on all living systems. The United States Military is the largest institutional polluter on the planet while they continue to green-wash the issue as they now confront the spreading public information and international scandal of cancer producing groundwater contamination.

Militarism is an environmental issue

This issue of NNOMYnews we look the US military's toxic legacy on our planet. We encourage young people: if you want to help stop climate change, look for careers paths outside the US military. Not only can military service be harmful to you and others in direct ways, but the infrastructure that supports war also supports the depletion and outright destruction of many of the world's precious natural resources, and of our health and futures.

Teach Climate Justice Campaign

The climate crisis threatens our students’ lives. And yet, throughout the United States, schools have failed to put the climate at the center of the curriculum.

To address this gulf between the climate emergency and schools’ inadequate response, the Zinn Education Project has launched a campaign to “Teach Climate Justice.” How do we teach the climate crisis in a way that also confronts racism, economic inequality, misogyny, militarism, xenophobia, and that imagines the kind of world that we would like to live in?

We offer classroom-tested lessons, workshops for educators, and a sample school board climate justice resolution.

Please use these lessons and additional recommended materials, send us your teaching stories, and spread the word on social media (#TeachClimateJustice). The climate crisis is not going away. That means that teaching for climate justice is work we all need to do. Join us.

Indoctrination & Education:
Who's Really Brainwashing Our Children?

It would come as no surprise that the very same people lambasting Obama for attempting to infiltrate America's school system in an effort to indoctrinate the malleable minds of our youth are staunch advocates of the United States' military might, planetary hegemony, who put "Support Our Troops" bumper stickers on their American-made, gas-guzzling clunkers. The irony here is that the people who are apparently trying to "protect" our children from the grasp of "big government" have no problem with federally-mandated programs that, not only allow, but guarantee US military recruiters access to school kids. It seems that while they fear the multicultural commander-in-chief's motives for telling students to study hard, they are just fine with the military's invasion of those same students' privacy in an effort to condition them to kill indigenous people in foreign countries at the behest of that same commander-in-chief

10 Ways that the Climate Crisis and Militarism are Intertwined

Medea Benjamin, Foreign Policy in Focus - The environmental justice movement that is surging globally is intentionally intersectional, showing how global warming is connected to issues such as race, poverty, migration and public health. One area intimately linked to the climate crisis that gets little attention, however, is militarism. Here are some of the ways these issues — and their solutions — are intertwined.

California Takes on PFAS Contamination While the Military is a Primary Source of the Pollution

Pat Elder, World Beyond War - There was an earthquake in California on August 23, 2019, although the ground didn’t move, and few noticed. That was the day California ordered the state’s water systems to establish the nation’s lowest Notification Levels for dangerous Per and Poly Fluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) in drinking water.

Two of the deadliest PFAS are Perfluorooctane Sulfonate (PFOS) and Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA). The Notification Level for PFOA has been lowered from 14 parts per trillion (ppt) to 5.1 ppt and the Notification Level for PFOS has been lowered from 13 ppt to 6.5 ppt. These are the lowest levels at which they can be reliably detected in drinking water using current technologies.

Effective January 1, 2020, water systems must notify local government if the limits are exceeded. The State Water Board recommends that water agencies also notify customers and the California Division of Drinking Water (DDW).

The policy reflects the state’s recognition that the smallest amounts of these substances endanger human health. State water officials say the new levels are “intended to protect against cancer and noncancer effects, including effects on the liver and immune system.”

If a chemical is present in drinking water that is provided to consumers at concentrations “considerably greater” than the notification level, DDW recommends that the drinking water system take the source out of service. The DDW will recommend a water system to be shut down if PFOA and PFOS total more than 70 ppt. This is known as the “response level.”

Sen. John Barrasso, (R-WY) is the Senate’s top recipient of cash from the chemical industry.

Profit, Power, and Poison

Pat Elder, World BEYOND War -  There’s a battle raging in the halls of Congress that will soon determine if the U.S. government will take steps to protect people from deadly contamination caused by the release of Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, (PFAS) from military and industrial sites. The stakes couldn’t be higher with the health of humanity imperiled by these “forever chemicals.” More than a dozen bills are being discussed along with a handful of proposed amendments to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) that could require the military and private polluters to clean up their PFAS contamination. Congress has the inherent power to rein in these chemicals. As a practical matter it is unlikely.

There are still some legislators on Capitol Hill who are fighting to protect public health, although their numbers are diminished. The story is simple. The military is the worst offender, poisoning millions around the globe through its use of aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) in routine fire-training exercises. The AFFF contains high levels of carcinogenic PFAS and it is allowed to seep into groundwater, surface water, and municipal water systems, providing multiple pathways to human consumption.
