Pat Alviso, a mother of an active duty Marine, is the National Coordinator for Military Families Speak Out, a national organization with members across the country who have or have had loved ones in the military since 9-11. They support the troops, want them home now and take care of them when they get home. On behalf of thousands of military families, she continues to speak widely about the true cost of war at events, classrooms and other venues across the country, and can be found at regularly held vigils, demonstrations, community events, and memorial displays to help bring all of our troops home from unjust wars in the Middle East.

I have been involved in community organizing and advocacy at the local level for over 30 years. I have lived and traveled extensively, so have a broad perspective on how communities run, and many ideas of “best practices” through my experience. I work with young people to promote economic, social and environmental sustainability, and am inspired by their ideas and noble hearts. I would love the chance to be on the board in downtown San Pedro and help our town promote innovative ideas to address our common problems.

Originally from the east coast, Maria came to CCW from the high desert of north-central New Mexico where she worked for disarmament and accountability of the two nuclear weapons laboratories in that state. Before coming to CCW, Maria served as coordinator of the Albuquerque Center for Peace and Justice. In that capacity, Maria organized Another Side: Truth in Military Recruiting, bringing the voices and experiences of combat and other veterans to thousands of students across the state and in Indian Country. It was during her time at the Peace and Justice Center that Maria began providing counseling to local members of the military and their families during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Joanne Sheehan has been an organizer, nonviolence trainer and educator for over 48 years. She has been on the staff of War Resisters League's New England Office in Norwich, CT since co-founding it in 1985. Active with War Resister's International (WRI) since 1983, she served as WRI Chair from 1998 to 2006. Joanne has been the Chair of the Voluntown Peace Trust (formerly the Community for Nonviolent Action) since 2012.
