The workshop will examine a variety of issues, including the Urban war on poor and Black, from SWAT response to MOVE, training with “incendiary device” to "Battle of Seattle" Violence from wars brought back into the community, prisons and profit targeting immigrants. Torture taught in military returns when veterans become police and prison guards, police training/ tactics for controlling protest.
The disastrous outcome of the US-initiated invasion and occupation of Iraq, in loss of life and wasted resources, has precipitated within the US military and many allied research and political organizations a thorough re?examination of counterinsurgency doctrine (COIN). The resulting consolidation of COIN and broader Pentagon strategies has led to steps to integration in the military mission of a significantly more complex “conflict transformation” and “nation?building” framework. This approach signals the US military's entry into so-called 'fourth-generation warfare'
