Description: Goal is to get as many organizations as possible to list Counter Recruitment Packet for 2025 on their websites & Social Media

About Campaign:
U.S. support for Israel’s war in Gaza and the recent deployment of 100 U.S. troops to staff anti-missile sites in Israel has given many students across the country a reason to question the presence of military programs in their schools.
Many do not want to participate in a service that they believe is tied to a government complicit in “ethnic cleansing” and that has caused the deaths of many innocents, including non-combative women and children.
The National Network Opposing the Militarization of Youth (NNOMY) is providing a packet of resources to inform those who wish to act against military programs that serve the purpose of military recruitment in schools.
The packet includes information on strategies to push -back against the following:
- School use of the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB), a military entrance exam used for student data mining by the military.
- School releases of student contact information to military recruiters.
- Automatic placement of high school students in Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) classes without parental or student consent.
- Department of Defense STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) classes that are being funded and sponsored by military contracting firms like Raytheon designed to attract students to careers directly related to the destruction in Gaza.
Peace activist groups are encouraged to take local and regional action with their local school districts to restrict placement of students into military programs without consent, to support only optional ASVAB testing, and to promote the right of students to request no contact from military recruiters in their schools.
If your group would like more information, please see the links below and also consider joining an online Zoom consultation with a counter-recruitment activist to discuss how you can participate in limiting unwanted military recruitment efforts in your community schools.
Interested groups should Request a private Consultation with a NNOMY activist by sending your information by CONTACT FORM.

Rhode Island School of Design (RISD)
Recent activism: The Graphic Design department at RISD has publicly supported student protests. In May 2024, the department, along with others, issued statements backing pro-Palestinian demonstrators who occupied an administrative building. Historical context: RISD has a long history of student activism, with movements dating back to the Vietnam War era. Past actions have included creating political posters and organizing against fascism and campus issues.
California Institute of the Arts (CalArts)
Historical reputation: CalArts has a long legacy of producing conceptually and politically-charged art, partly due to its experimental and interdisciplinary environment. In 2017, students participated in a nationwide "J20 Art Strike" to protest the presidential inauguration. Recent activism: In late 2024, staff and faculty, including those in graphics-related fields, moved to unionize, citing concerns about pay, workloads, and diversity. The CalArts library has also archived examples of recent art activism and protest, including student projects with political themes.
California State University: Graphis Designers for Peace
https://library.csusm.edu/context-library-series/designersforpeace
School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC)
Recent controversy: In June 2025, student art was at the center of a free speech controversy. An anti-Israel exhibition resulted in the school restricting the exhibit and led to accusations of viewpoint discrimination, highlighting intense student political expression. Historical context: As a prominent art school located in a major city, SAIC has long been a hub for art with a political message. The Art Institute of Chicago museum has also run exhibits focused on art and activism.
University of California, Berkeley
Graphics and design history: While a large public university rather than a specialized art school, UC Berkeley has a noteworthy history of politically radical graphics. During the "long 1960s," faculty and students in the environmental design program created thousands of political posters covering issues from the Vietnam War to police violence.
Broader campus environment: The university maintains a reputation for left-leaning politics and activism, influencing its various departments. This environment has historically fostered strong student-led social and political movements.
Note on measuring radicalism
Measuring "radicalism" is not a formal academic or political exercise. Instead, the perception is shaped by public events, campus protests, and the political themes explored in student and faculty work. Therefore, any assessment is based on recent and historical examples of political action and expression.

War gains support and acceptance from widespread belief in false information, and the accumulation of false information into generally false concepts or myths about war. This is good news, because it means we are not intractably divided by ideology or worldview. Rather, we will find more widespread agreement about war if we can just achieve more widespread awareness of accurate information.

For the 2025 school year our Back to School Packet is focusing on student privacy issues; issues that are of importance to students, parents and the community. We urge you to review the information contained in the packet and join us in stopping the military intrusion into our schools.
