Eliminate Selective Service for Everyone

The "Eliminate Selective Service for Everyone" campaign category addresses the antiquated Selective Service system and the demand for its elimination. With the issue of women now being qualified for combat duties including fighting, the issue has been brought before the congress and senate of the United States to require women to register, like men, in the years when young adults are typically drafted into the services to fight wars if the draft needs to be re-initiated in the event of a national crisis where there are not sufficient troops to meet the troop requirement.

This campaign, "Eliminate Selective Service for Everyone," asks for the elimination of this demand based on it being a violation of basic and internationally recognized human rights protocols including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Congress is getting ready to sneak an expansion of the military draft registration into the next NDAA. If they succeed, young women will be forced to register for the military draft along with young men. This isn't a step forward for gender equality - it's a step backward for all genders! There is no "feminist" reason to choose the coerced militarism of a draft over ending draft registration.

Tell your officials: The only feminist answer to the question of draft registration is to abolish it for all genders!

A Feminist Perspective on Broadening the Anti-draft Movement -- Ann Wrixon, former staff member of the Central Committee for Conscientious Objectors

The following is a slightly abridged version of an article that appeared in a special “Women and Militarism” issue of Draft NOtices, published in April 1986. It originally appeared in The Objector, a journal produced by the Central Committee for Conscientious Objectors (disbanded in 2009). We are reprinting it now because of its relevance to Women’s History Month in March, and it raises points that are still important to consider as we face a real possibility that women will soon be required to register for any future draft.
